Murals in the Market was recently ranked one of the world's top 5 mural festivals by Smithsonian magazine. After having photographed all four years of this festival, it's hard for me to imagine any one better than this. Primarily set in the Eastern Market on Detroit's near east side, 1xRUN and the Eastern Market Corporation have produced more than 125 new murals created since 2015 by local, national and international street artists. The festival goes on for 8-10 days in mid-September with more than just murals being painted; there are panel discussions, artists dinners, meet and greet opportunities, site-specific installations, block parties, nighttime events that coordinate with Eastern Market After Dark, and more. As a regular attendee & photographer I have gotten to know amazing artists from Detroit, all parts of the U.S., and around the world. Many of us stay in touch via Instagram, as well as meeting up again if/when they are invited to return as participating artists. It has become one of my favorite weeks of the year.
